National reconciliation
The Uluru Statement from the Heart identifies three important matters:
- truth telling
- voice
- treaty.
We take these as the key areas to focus on for change and will promote and work with the Stonnington community to achieve these outcomes.
Truth telling is about us knowing about, accepting, and acknowledging the harmful actions of early settlement on First Peoples, and the ongoing hardship and pain caused.
Voice is to support a right to self-determination at various levels and in particular to speak directly to Parliament. The failure of the Voice to Parliament referendum is profoundly disappointing for Australia and our community. Yet, it has only strengthened our resolve. Reconciliation Stonnington remains committed to truth-telling, justice and the vision set out in the Uluru Statement from the Heart. We will continue walking this path together — with courage, humility, and hope.
Treaty is to complete what should have been done 250 years ago: recognise the sovereignty of Indigenous Australians of this land now called Australia. It was not Terra nullius (‘nobody's land’) – always was, always will be, Aboriginal land.
